Liliana Zavala Romo
Black and White Photography
"For me, photography is not only capturing a pretty image of something or somebody, but it is a form of personal expression. It doesn't matter what is in front of me, but rather how i see it and what i want to express about it"
Liliana Zavala Romo was born and raised in Aguascalientes, ags., Mexico. She took her first black and white photography classes at one one of the best art institutes in Aguascalientes, called "Instituto Cultural Los Arquitos" for three semesters during 1999-2000. She became fascinated with the mystery and magic of the darkroom.
In 2001, she made a transition, moving from Mexico to New Mexico following her heart. Recently she took a class at UNM-Taos, taught by Robbie Steinbach. After that class she was invited to participate in the show "Through a Lens Sharply" along with some of Taos best photographers. She was also included in another art show at the Millicent Rogers museum.
At the moment Liliana has a show call "The Substitutes" on display at Vivac Winery and Gallery.

"The Substitutes"
I have always enjoyed taking photos that capture a particular moment or situation in a spontaneous way. People see a camera in front of them and many things can happen. They have reactions that all of us have if suddenly a stranger approached to take our picture. One day i unknowingly discovered the perfect substitute for people in the type of photos i was looking for: mannequins! In different situations, different scenes, they didn't pose for me, none of them became upset, etc. On the contrary, they allowed me to enter into their intimacy and to discover their secrets without any restrictions.
For some people, the photos may seem to be just images of superficial and strange objects. For me, every one of these images tells a different story. They capture different situations at times dramatic, at times intriguing or funny, happy or scary. Some are very strong, others are very intimate. All are situations through which people may pass but this time they are represented by objects, reflections, window displays, mysterious details and mannequins.
I have really enjoyed making every one of these photos; I've been surprised by all the details. It seems like every time i look at them i see something new, and they tell me a new story. At times i almost see myself reflected in them. And so, i invite you to discover the photos for yourself and to find in them your own stories.
